THINK Surgical Opens New R&D facility in Montréal

The company is expanding its presence in the city to develop the next generation TMINI® Miniature Robotic System

October 23, 2024

THINK Surgical, Inc., an innovator that develops and markets orthopedic robots, is digging its roots in Montréal with a new state-of-the-art facility to strengthen its team’s research and development capabilities. The Fremont, California-based company is behind the TMINI Miniature Robotic System, a handheld, wireless robotic system that assists surgeons in their total knee replacement procedures.

THINK Surgical first established a presence in Montréal in 2017 with Sunil Rottoo, Director of TMINI Systems, managing the robot’s software development from a cooperative-working space in the city. Through organic growth, the local team now boasts a dozen engineers and other professionals, working closely with local institutions. The new Montréal facility will allow the team to accelerate development of another next generation of TMINI System.

“This investment demonstrates THINK Surgical’s commitment to its employees in the Montréal office and recognition of Montréal’s strong expertise in medical technology. Our dedicated team has been developing the TMINI System software from Montréal for the past 6 years. We have a strong team and are excited to continue developing another next generation of TMINI System,” said Sunil Rottoo, Director of TMINI System.

“We’re very excited to solidify and increase our presence in the Montréal area. The local medical device expertise is world-class and expanding rapidly. Adding offices and lab space for the current team with room to add new employees is a great move for us. This will allow us to tap into the local talent and strengthen our collaboration with local institutions”, said Bruno Filliat, Chief Technology Officer.

The TMINI Miniature Robotic System first received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2023. Since then, the company has been focused on executing its commercial strategy in the US market. In July, the TMINI System version 1.1 (TMINI 1.1) received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, marking the second TMINI System clearance in less than 15 months. The TMINI 1.1 software empowers surgeon choice throughout the procedure by enabling Positional Refinement and Optimization of the implant intra-operatively.

“Greater Montréal’s thriving MedTech industry is home to a cluster of some 240 companies, making it a hotbed for investors seeking top expertise. Combine that with the region’s world-class artificial intelligence ecosystem, you get investments such as THINK Surgical’s to develop technology to enhance our health care practices. The broader life sciences ecosystem in Greater Montréal is unlike any other in the world, and we are devoted to taking it even further”, said Stéphane Paquet, President and CEO, Montréal International.
