Québec’s International Policy: Providing the right tools to attract investment, foreign talent and international organizations
The Government of Québec has unveiled its new International Policy—Québec on the World Stage: Involved, Engaged, Thriving—designed to raise Québec’s profile, drive business and economic growth, and advance the province’s cultural, social and political agenda. As announced in the Québec Economic Plan, an additional $100 million will be earmarked to support Québec’s international initiatives.
“I am very proud to announce our new policy, which will make sure Québec’s voice is heard internationally in today’s changing world. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Ministère des Relations internationales. That’s 50 years of experience that Québec, a credible and responsible player, can build on to ensure that its actions are always informed by one principle: whatever falls within its jurisdiction at home, also falls within its jurisdiction outside its borders,” said Christine St-Pierre, Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie.
Montréal International, Greater Montréal’s economic development agency, welcomes Québec’s new International Policy, as it will provide the support the agency needs to attract and retain foreign investment, skilled workers and international organizations.
“Open economies like Québec and Montréal need to look past national borders to create wealth. And that’s where Montréal International comes in. Our role is now more crucial than ever and the new Policy will help us deliver on our commitment,” said Hubert Bolduc, President and CEO of Montréal International.
The Government of Québec also highlighted the strategic importance of international organizations in Montréal, a city that is home to the highest number of international organizations in Canada and the third-highest in North America, behind New York City and Washington, D.C.
“The 64 international organizations here form a community that is unique in Canada, making Montréal a future-oriented, outward-looking city. They bring significant benefits while raising Montréal’s international profile, and we want to make sure they continue to grow and thrive here,” added Mr. Bolduc.
In addition to enhancing Montréal’s global reach and reputation, international organizations also play a key role in the local economy by generating direct economic spinoffs and positioning the city as a top destination for international events.
