Montréal among the top three major North American cities for job creation
Since 2018, Montréal has been on the Canadian forefront with the strongest economic growth. In addition, its exceptional performance is also reflected in job creation. With a 5.6% growth in the number of total jobs created between 2016 and 2018, Greater Montréal has climbed up to third spot among the 20 major cities in Canada and the U.S.
This high number of jobs being created in the region is the result of the vibrant tech sectors. In fact, over that same period, jobs in high-tech sectors [1] went up 9.1%, putting Montréal in second place among the Top 20, ahead of key markets such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and New York City.
Montréal leads the way in creating high-tech jobs
While the high-tech sector is experiencing strong growth in Greater Montréal, it also accounts for a significant share of the economic activity. Above all, with close to 8% of the total number of jobs concentrated in the high-tech sectors, the city was ranked sixth place among the Top 20 among other major cities of the Canada and the U.S. in 2018.
In particular, Montréal stands out for expanded job creation in three key high-tech sectors:
- 2nd place in aerospace
- 6th place in life sciences and health technologies
- 7th place in information and communications technologies
