High-speed train in Canada: A revolution for rail transport between Québec City and Toronto

February 24, 2025

A high-speed train infrastructure poised to boost Greater Montréal and Canada’s competitiveness

The “Alto” high-speed train project, announced on February 19, 2025, by the Government of Canada, marks a significant step forward in sustainable mobility and economic development. This ambitious endeavour aims to accelerate transportation decarbonization while boosting productivity and the economies of cities along the 1,000 km route connecting Québec City to Toronto, via Greater Montréal.

A high-speed train: Key to enhancing Canada’s economic vitality

The Québec-Toronto corridor alone accounts for 40% of Canada’s GDP. This vital region is home to numerous manufacturing plants and business ecosystems, driving constant movement of people and goods.

Each week, approximately 80 freight trains pass through the Port of Montréal, the largest container port in Eastern Canada, providing trade access to over 140 countries. A high-speed train would enhance rail logistics and strengthen Canada’s competitiveness on the global stage.

A sustainable and efficient transportation solution

This high-speed train project is fully aligned with the commitment to transportation electrification, addressing current environmental challenges. Travelers are increasingly seeking fast and eco-friendly alternatives: every day, dozens of flights connect Toronto, Montréal, Québec City, and Ottawa, while 60,000 vehicles travel along Highway 401 near Kingston.

With a Montréal-Toronto journey of less than three hours on an entirely electrified rail line, the “Alto” high-speed train will become a key asset in reducing our carbon footprint and transitioning to greener mobility.

Challenges and opportunities of the “Alto” project

The launch of the high-speed train presents significant financial and logistical challenges. However, Canada’s history is rich with examples of bold infrastructure projects that have shaped our economy. Hundreds of kilometers of railroads were constructed across the country, contributing to the development of modern Canada.

In this context, the Alto project is much more than a simple rail transport initiative: it represents a strategic lever for economic competitiveness and sustainable mobility. The benefits will be felt across society, strengthening connectivity between metropolitan regions and enhancing their attractiveness.
