New study sheds light on Montréal’s power of attraction
Brand Finance, a world leader in brand valuation, has recently released a new study on the perception of 100 cities in some 20 countries, and one element caught our attention: Montréal ranked 7th in terms of “consideration”, ahead of London, and just behind Zurich, Amsterdam and New York. In other words, it means that “when one knows Montréal, they are more likely to consider it as a place to invest, work or study”, according to the study’s authors.
As part of the Brand Finance City Index 2023, 15,000 respondents around the world were asked about their general impression of each city’s global “familiarity” and “reputation”, as well as their own “consideration” for living, working, studying, investing, touring and even retiring there.
Montréal only ranks 39th in the world in the overall study (all categories combined). This result can be explained in part by the city’s lower global familiarity. However, Montréal brilliantly stands out among those that are most successful in “converting” their familiarity and reputation into “consideration”. Simply put, when respondents know about Montréal, it becomes a destination of choice, particularly for foreign investors, international talent and tourists. And our own historical analyses confirm it: when Montréal makes it to a foreign investor’s shortlist, it wins the project 60% of the time.
