Montréal still ranked among best student cities in the world
No. 1 in the Americas and No. 1 in the world for “Student View”
Want to study abroad and have the best university experience in the world? According to a poll of 50,000 students, Montréal is the place to be!

“Student View” is one of the six criteria used for the 2018 QS Best Student Cities (QS Quacquarelli Symonds) ranking that was published today. Montréal clinched the no. 1 spot among the best student cities in the Americas and the no. 4 spot in the world, behind London (no. 1), Tokyo (no. 2) and Melbourne (no. 3).
“Montréal is much more than a university experience. It’s a life experience!”, said Hubert Bolduc, President and CEO, Montréal International.
“Not only are students able to study at some of the best universities and enjoy a high purchasing power, but the city also offers a unique environment that revolves around the arts, culture, friendliness and diversity.”
In the next few days, Concordia University (@Concordia), UQAM (@UQAM), McGill University (@mcgillu), Université de Montréal (@UMontreal), INRS (@U_INRS), HEC Montréal (@HEC_Montreal), ETS (@etsmtl), ÉNAP (@ENAP_Universite), Polytechnique Montréal (@polymtl), TÉLUQ University (@TELUQ), the Fédération des cégeps (@fedecegeps), the Regroupement des collèges du Montréal métropolitain, the City of Montréal (@MTL_Ville) and Montréal International (@MTLINTL) will be sharing this good news on their respective social platform. The initiative, which includes a promotional video, should enable us to reach hundreds of thousands of students here and around the world.
Attract and foster the retention of international students
The Government of Québec recently entrusted Montréal International with a new mandate to attract international students to Greater Montréal, by working in conjunction with and in complement to higher education institutions.
This new mandate has just been added to the promotional activities already underway with the I choose Montréal (#IChooseMontréal) project, in partnership with the Québec Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion, designed to encourage the city’s 33,000 international students to stay and make Montréal their home.
“International students make up a strategic labour pool to build the region’s knowledge economy. We want to encourage them to choose Montréal to pursue their studies and to establish a career here,” added Mr. Bolduc.
~ Methodology ~
QS ranks the 100 best cities in the world from among 489 university cities considered, based on six criteria: University Rankings, Student Mix, Desirability, Employer Activity, Affordability, and Student View.
University Rankings: Cosmopolitan city and the university capital of Canada, Montréal has a number of prestigious institutions such as McGill University (currently ranked 32nd in the world and 2nd in Canada based on the QS Top Universities 2018 ranking) and Université de Montréal (130th in the world and 5th in Canada).
Student Mix: Montréal places 5th in the world based on criteria such as student population, inclusion and tolerance, and the ratio of local and international students.
Desirability: Greater Montréal ranks 10th in the world, which considers criteria such as safety, pollution and corruption.
Employer Activity: The city earns 20th spot when it comes to how quickly graduates can expect to find a job.
Affordability: Even though it ranks 69th in the world, Greater Montréal is still the most affordable region for students in North America due to its low tuition costs and low rents.
Student View: Montréal is ranked 1st as it offers the best university experience in the world and makes students want to stay in the city after graduation.
